The Need

The intense energy and very short duration of an electric arc flash, reaching temperatures of 35,000°F, can both burn the skin directly and cause ignition of clothing made from regular and poly/cotton fabrics. The majority of sever and fatal burn injuries are due to the individuals clothes igniting and continuing to burn, not by the exposure itself. Arc flash exposure flame resistant clothing will provide a level of thermal protection, which is listed as an “ATPV” or “Arc Rating”, and will self extinguish, thus limiting the potential for more serious burn injuries from garment ignition.

The Standard

The National Fire Protection Association published the latest edition of the NFPA 70E Standard (Standard for Electrical Safety Requirements for Employee Workplaces) in 2004. Employees shall wear F.R. clothing wherever there is possible exposure to an electrical arc flash above the threshold incident energy level for second degree burn, (1.2 cal/cm2).

The Solution

Frham has created a breathable flame resistant cotton fabric that meets up to Hazard Risk Category 2 with an Arc Thermal Protection Value of (8.7). The material is also designed for “hot work” applications such as welding and cutting. This material will not support combustion. We manufacture all of our breathable flame resistant clothing proudly in the USA. This makes availability and style change easy to accommodate.
